Housing benefit - can I claim?

Hi All
Can anyone give me some advice please on if I can claim Housing Benefit - or could someone point me in the direction of a helpful website - I can't find one!
I am a single parent currently living with parents - its not an ideal situation and I need to move before I throttle my Mam!
I am registered homeless with my local council but it is still taking a while to get somewhere. I have never really considered private renting because I assumed I couldn't afford it but if I can claim so HB then I may be able to.
I work f/t and get £1,120 after deductions per month, I get WTC and CTC - would I be able to get any help?
Thanks all

You probably would but I can't see why you would need it with that income coupled with the tax credits and child benefit.

Put all your details in the link below and it will tell what you can claim.

  • It would depend on the number of children, their ages and sex of children, savings over £6k and any payment of child care costs and what the deductions are from your wages (i.e. just tax and ni contributions or also including pension and union contributions) how much tax credits you get, number of hours worked and most importantly what the Local Housing Allowance rate is for your area.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Thanks for the replies all - my income may sound like a lot but once you figure in rent, c/t, utility bills, food, petrol etc, I'm left with not much! I don't go on holiday or have an extravagent life-style. The CTC I get go straight to pay the Nursery - my daughter is f/t and the fees are £656 a month, I get 70% off but I then have to make up the other 30% so thats where the WTC goes. I just want to move and have my own space with my daughter without my Mother moaning about what I'm dressing her in or what I'm eating etc! Roll on going back to work in Sept!
