Poor guy from Hong Kong. I had to pay 6 months rent up front for my tenancy and I hope the landlord and estate agent weren't wondering if I was going to start a brothel or cannabis factory. I haven't the first idea about how I'd go about doing that even if I thought it was a great idea...

Although thinking about it, the flat is opposite the prison so I would be in a prime position to catapult contraband to the local criminals if I so wished. Not sure how I'd get paid for it though...

This rings alarm bells about your agent.

Checking the applicant's employment status, and informing the landlord along with all the credit checks, up-front payment arrangements, proposed guarantor etc, is just so fundamental you should not need to ask.....

Wow thanks GM :) I don't have clue about these things, but when I asked another estate agent, he said something along the same lines. Thanks again :)

    1. Student, (but moving into a 'proper rental' i.e. not sharing with other students).
    2. I'm from the UK, though lived in Spain last year as part of my course.
    3. I said I had savings, no proof asked for.
    4. Guarantor was an alternative to 6 months rent.

As someone who came from living abroad with no UK history, I was asked to provide:

    1. A reference from my previous LL + £140 for that reference check. As the LA was a large chain, they needed to go through their head office to find a German speaker who could do the check with my previous LL.

    2. Proof of identity (passport copy)

    3. Proof of UK employment (showed employment contract, provided employer contact details)

    4. 6 months rent up front + deposit
