It's being introduced gradually starting in October and ending by 2017, so I don't suppose anything will change very suddenly.

If it causes problems they would no doubt introduce supplementary packages to ensure cracks were papered over. Net budget effect, from existing, little different but escalating implementation costs.

Surely if you change the definition of 'unemployment' and the numbers of unemployed rise, nothing has really changed.

It's a bit like measuring your waist in inches rather than cm and thinking you've lost 60% of your body mass!

It is an educated guess. But its common knowledge that there are many who do not like the hassle of JSA signing on every 2 weeks, so they say they are self employed working 30hrs week and get about the same amount working tax credits as long as the profits are low.

The change in October will end all that.

Oh wait I do not know the exact numbers to two decimal places, so yes you are right. Its not a problem at all. There probably are none doing this you must be right, and yes the government numbers about unemployed and self employed must be 100% correct.

Wow so pleased you sorted that out. Lets carry on looking at the world through rose tinted specs.

What informs this educated guess? There are only 4,200,000 self employed people in the UK. Are you seriously trying to suggest that at least half of those are secretly unemployed (millions implies at least 2 million).

I think you're clutching at straws DLW.

4.2m self-employed representing about 15% of the working population. There are 7.7m households in receipt of WTC, so at a rough guess, no more than 1.2m of those households will include someone who is self employed. (And probably less than that, since there are more people than there are households.)

Conclusion; the guess isn't educated at all.

What many are talking about is that those self employed not making much profit, will have to earn at least min wage for the 30hrs per week to keep getting their universal credit. Or they will have to be like those on what used to be called JSA but this type of universal credit you can still work but if you dont earn NMW then you have to and sign on.

How the numbers of unemployed will be working out will be interesting to see after October.

As everyone knows the unemployment numbers are fudged. Unemployment is growing if you include all the self employed who get working tax credits but make a loss year upon year.

What changes will universal credit bring this October? If they are not making min wage per hour they will be added to the unemployment numbers. That is what is proposed at the moment, starting in October. If there are no changes or its not postponed yet again, in October the unemployment numbers are going to shoot up!

Most self employed say they are working 30hrs to get the max amount. There are millions who are not on JSA but instead just say they are working 30hrs and getting about the same as JSA but its called working tax credit.

Still think it'll be millions? I smell back sliding.
