i got a overpayment letter for child tax?

hi ive got a letter from the tax office saying ive been overpayed by £1389 , my wife got stright on the long winded phone to see why , they said oh you havent recived the 2nd letter yet? this is for £700 aswell so all in all i owe over 2k to them , ive got no proof from them to say how why and where this has come from? this goes back to 2011 apparently if i owed so much why did they carry on paying me again this year from april till now £74 a month , this is getting me really stressed owing 2k i cant afford this by the 31st of august ive started a dd up for £30 a month to pay this back and this will take upto 2019 , im wanting to dispute and ask them fro the full workings out and an explination on why they carried on paying us.
the 1 thing the tax office said is , my wife is self employed and she does 15 hrs a week , ,,,if she did 16 or more hours a week we would get somthing , why would her hours alter anything?
trouble is now im on a lot more this year so we would be near to 40k by next april.

Sorry my phone replaces words. Do you claim childcare?
  • You will probably have carried on getting payments if no change of circs was reported. Other than that, there is no reason you would have continued to get payments if all your details wherew up to date.

You say you are near £40k now, have you always kept them up to date with increases in income, or do you normally wait till the end of the year, this may be the problem.
