e cheque and paypal

I sold a camera on ebay early last week and sold it via ebay and paypal. Initially the buyer already sent payment using e cheque with a message saying that his paypal funds were low so that's the reason he sent this way. I asked him if he didn't mind paying the usual paypal way. he said that's fine but I would have to cancel the initial e cheque from him (which I did) and wait a few days before he could pay via paypal. He did pay using paypal and it was in my account on Friday.

I received an email from paypal today saying that the e cheque from this person has cleared. (Even though I cancelled it) I definitely only received one payment for the camera (via normal paypal)

Why would it say the e cheque had cleared when I cancelled his payment?

I don't want the guy coming back saying two lots of payment have come out and I need to reimburse him because he would effectively be getting the camera for free if that were the case.

Could the email have been sent by mistake?

Ignore the email, what does your paypal transaction history state? If there's only one deposit of the correct amount for the transaction, then you don't need to worry. Paypal can check and refund if the buyer has been charged twice in error.

If there's 2 deposits then you may have to ask Paypal whats gone wrong and they can refund one of them.
