I have used human toenail cliippers on my cat too, with good results. She didn't mind one bit, especially as I did them when she was chilled out.

I have stopped though, as now letting her out the house. It was quite funny seeing her trying to climb trees, then sliding down them as she couldn't grip. A few days later, she was 30ft up in a Cypress tree ! My heart was in my mouth as she got down.

Dreading the Christmas tree now ! lol

I've got the same issue (well, my mog has!) - my boy is 16 years old now and has become an indoor puss, trouble is his back claws are getting rather long, and like with your kitty taurusgb, they're getting caught in the carpets and stuff.

I bought nail clippers which have a safety stop at the back to stop you clipping too far up the nail. It is easy if the cat doesn't mind you playing with their toes and is happy to keep still till you get them all done. If you're nervous though, I would also suggest taking your cat to the vets so the nurse can show your OH how its done.

Just the thing for me I think, just like taurusgb, I'm scared of clipping too much! Really good idea to take the cat to the vets first to see how it's done, too. :)

Thanks for this thread, I've been trying to work out what to do about those darn claws! :)

I have done both mine since their where kittens, now 14 and 10 years old. Also did the cats before them.

Only clip the clear part of the nail not the pink part. It needs done every 3 weeks or so, the nails can grow at different rates too. I used to use normal nail clippers for years, then bought the proper scissors from the pet shop.

I have always clipped all my cats claws. I only have one cat now but did find that when I had more, I could only do one cat a night as word soon got round I had the clippers out lol

I have found the best way is to kneel over the cat so its body is between your legs and only its head and front legs in front. Very gently press the cats foot so the claws are exposed and cut the clear bit - stay away from where the white bit ends. I can't say the cats like it but they don't moan and its soon over.

I suggest to get your cat used to the idea you have a few trail runs when you hold its feet and expose the claws in a position you find comfortable but don't cut until you and cat feels ready.

I use clippers like the ones shown in a post above. I have found you need to get a good quality pair that cut cleanly, I have purchased cheap ones and found them to be no good.
