Set up as sole trader.... but heard nothing!

I had set up as a sole trader in April but not heard a thing back, no paperwork, nothing.

So i done it again in June and still heard nothing?

I really need a tax reference to go ahead with claiming WTC etc but don't know how to check if i am actually registered?

Can anyone help?

Did you do it online or over the phone?

You could try phoning HMRC to see what is going on.

You should certainly have heard from them by now: you get a direct debit form for NI and a form to claim exemption if you expect low earnings...

Definately chase them up, it normally takes about 3 weeks for your UTR to come through the post so well overdue.

Yes - and I really do hope that you have not been set up twice. From experience it can be a nightmare getting a UNIQUE tax number deleted. Additionally you could end up quoting the number that they eventually delete to WTC office etc. So:

1. Confirm that you have been set up.
2. Confirm that you have not been set up twice.
3. If two UTR's exist establish which one to use AND that the other has been deleted.
