Banks and store cards

Apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I had a Debenhams store card which i'd forgotten about, and not used in at least 6 years, until it was a question prior to getting a credit report even though it didn't feature on the report.

I contacted Debenhams, and found out that GE Capital no longer run their cards and it was now done by Santander. I have received nothing from D'hams, GE or Santander in this period.

Not only was my account still active but i was actually in credit.

My question is, how is it that without asking or notifying me they can give all my details to another bank?
