Best anti moth treatment for carpets?

We have discovered a moth infestation in our front room (fitted) carpet. They have got in against one wall where the carpet is fitted to the skirting board. It was moth proof when we bought it, but that was 20 years ago and presumably it has worn off since.
We have a table against the wall concerned and a sofa nearby. We store board games under the table and we had a clear out of the games a couple of months back and it was ok then. They have got in behind the boxes and spread out from there to under the sofa. It is amazing how much damage they have done in a short time. It looks like the carpet will have to be replaced.
Anyone care to suggest how to exterminate the existing moths so they do not spread and also what is best treatment for a new carpet. Don't suggest bare floorboards. We have thought of that but it is a high ceiling room over a cellar and gets very chilly in winter. We have two ch rads in there but it still really needs a thick fitted carpet to stay warm in a cold winter.

We used a steam cleaner (Polti) on our area of infestation . Destroys the eggs. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

I don't know whether they might be concealed in the sofa, so that needs treating too?0

All they are designed to do is to tell you whether you still have moths coming in, they don't catch enough to be sold as a solution.http://www.totalwardrobecare.co.uk/xcart/Moth-box.html

The only answer is very regular vacuuming, though steam cleaning is even better if you have it.
I understood there were effective pesticides available before the EU [STRIKE]stuck its oar in[/STRIKE] introduced safety legislation.0
