Although you may not have done any of the damage yourself, you sound as if you're colluding with your other flatmates in blaming the foreign student, who has now left.

"My flat mates have, particular is one has done some damage to the communal area "

"we all agreed to blame it on him."

Perhaps if you'd been more honest about what had actually happened, you might not have been caught up in needing to pay a share of the fine.

Was there a deposit paid on the property and, if so, what has happened to it?

I am sorry, but it is hard to believe that one guy destroyed chairs and other property on his own. If this was actually the case, why didn't your flatmates and you report it to management when it originally happened? Halls management have heard every excuse under the sun, and failure to report damage makes you all look guilty. If you don't want to pay, shop the guys who did the damage, unless they are your mates. I wouldn't pay £400 for idiots who damage university property. Technically, you could be thrown out of university for damaging the university's property.

I had the same problem when I was in halls. My rugby-playing idiot flatmates trashed doors etc during a party. The next day I reported the damage and got moved to a different flat. I didn't pay for the damage.

dude- your landlord is obviously not an idiot- it sounds like it wasn't just the foreign student who broke the chairs (if he was even involved...)-

your landlord obviously sees through your little 'scheme' and is now making you pay- next time don't break chairs- what were you drunk or something? and more than 1 chair?????? what were you guys up to?

i could probably help you out but i don't morally feel up to it- next time don't be so stupid

This happened to us.. When we were in halls the american students didn't clean their stuff out and just left everything in the kitchen/their rooms but we got a joint bill for cleaning. I appealed to uni with a letter and had my fine removed - they couldn't contact any of the foreign students so had decided to just try and bill me and the other english girl - I thought this was a disgusting attitude!

Unless you have a form signed by this foreign student admitting that it was him that caused all the damage, then it may look like you're all just pointing the finger at him to get out of paying, because he's gone and uncontactable.

You're usually jointly responsible for furniture in halls, so I'm afraid you'll have to split it between all of you, and the hall can chase this foreign guy for his share of the fine.

£1800 in damage is rather alot, so if you have evidence that this 1 person caused all this damage (i.e. more than 1 person saw him), then get the police involved.

I presume all this damage was done in the last week of term, otherwise you would've got it all sorted before now?!!?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

What scheme? It may look like it but it isnt, i dont drink either. The chairs arent broken, "broken" the the legs have basically just fallen off, we can nail them back in place and it looks exactly like how it was, but they don't accept this. The sofa itself is fine.

The foreign student did a runner in this, we were happy to pay for marks on the walls, and other carpet stains which is standard but the chairs were done solely by him. The rest of the place is tip top.

I agree this should have been reported earlier, before leaving time, i have learnt from my mistake, immediate reporting, is the best. Probably going to buy new chairs from a shop instead of paying the fine, which works out alot cheaper.

If its just a few chairs £1800 seems a little ott - ask them for a breakdown of this.

225 pounds per chair, x 6-1350, the rest was for painting but that was affordable enough at 75 quid per person.

They are making heavy profit from replacing the chairs,

its similiar chair to which that girl is sitting on there.

you can't really see the chair there - but I doubt they cost £225. Tbh I think they may be taking the michael here. With the painting as well - £75/room/person?!?
