I'll try to be brief .
I have changed address twice this year (from London suburb to country market town), once into rented accomodation pending second move into own home. For the 1st move, I contacted broker and transfered cover to my rental address. Because the new area is not such a high risk area and the house a new-ish build (more secure), the premium was reduced and I received a refund of approx £40.
On the eve of the second move (same area , similar house) I contacted broker again to be told that contents insurance had been transfered to a new company. I contacted the new company and was told that they would have to cancel my original policy, although it still had over 4 months to run, and I would then given a new quote for a further twelve months (??????). They took no details, other than my name, new postcode and policy number and came back with a quote £3 dearer than my original (London) premium. They also took the trouble point out that it had only increased a small amount!!! Naturally, I declined their cover and, luckily I hadn't packed my PC, so I was able to hastily arrange cover through another company (N.U.) at almost half the cost of their quote.
Now, it seems to me, this other broker has looked at my original (London) premium and added a couple of quid to it hoping that I would just agree to extending my cover with them. Instead I have been forced into cancelling the premium. I do not intend to pay any fees in respect of this and I am prepared to write whatever to whomever but wondered if anyone has any advice or comments regarding the legality of their practice.
Thank you.
