new procedure for 1 year only about planning?

I had someone round about extending my house who said that for this year only they have to do some sort of survey, where they contact each neigbour either side of me to see if they object to me building an extension on the back of my house, does this seem right? or is it individual to each council?

  • The laws have been relaxed somewhat and it does include contacting your neighbours. But there is a little more to it.

Planning rules have been relaxed to extend permitted development to stimulate the market or some such nonsense. Of course you should consult your neighbours in any event. It's only, umm, neighbourly. But YOU do it once you have had your plans drawn up. Don't let anyone else charge you for the privelege especially if they are (even surreptitiously) heading towards a "now you have to have a Party Wall Agreement which I can do for you and it will cost £X" scenario.
