Leaving rented flat

We moved into our flat on the 26th of the month, and our rent is due on that date. We have since moved on to a statutory periodic tenancy and still pay rent on that date.
If we wished to serve notice that we were leaving am I correct in assuming that it would have to be received by the landlord on or before the 26th of the month?

No. I think you will find it must be served on or before 25th.0

I sent notice by recorded delivery on Thursday, since it hadn't been signed for this morning I sent a first class letter and got proof of postage.
This should be there tomorrow, the 24th. Am I now covered from all angles?

He can wave about all the documents he likes but without your dated signature on it he's going to have a hard job persuading the deposit-protection scheme's arbitrators if you dispute any deductions.0

The LL appointed an agent to let the place and then he took over. The agent had an inventory done by an outside contractor and then emailed it to us saying that if we didn't reply in 2 weeks that was proof of us accepting (which is a load of rubbish).
We left a message saying we weren't happy with it because it was done before the renovations were finished and wasn't accurate. We never heard anything and forgot about it, I cant even find a copy of the original report because it was so long ago.
The reality is that there is some damage to wallpaper, most of which wad caused by the LL putting up blinds, chipped and peeling paint caused by improper surface preparation and condensation (we have an email where he takes responsibility for this) so I think we should be ok.0
