Need light but not electrics!!!??

Options
Hi everyone

I am having my electrics done (new consumer unit etc etc and all the electrics tested etc for what needs doing).

Anyway the board is in the cellar so once the electrics are off there is no light and it is pitch black.

My electrician has asked me to ask my neigbours if I can use a socket in order to set up leads so we can get a light into the cellar whilst he is doing this.

Unfortunately I feel uncomfortable asking them as we do not have anything to do with them. Always say hello etc but just feel like I am taking the mick really.

What is the cost to hire a generator (if that's the right term) for the day in order to have a light on in the cellar all day..
Any help much appreciated.

Many thanks

The man from Del Monte he said "yes"

Had a few drinks got the courage and went round next door and asked if we could use their socket for the day to power up a light. They said 'Yes'.

Wohoo!! Will get them a case of lagers, and some flowers for the missus and a job well done.

Thanks for the responses guys. Much appreciated.

You can buy generators in B&Q really cheaply (about £70 or £80 I think). You could get one and sell it on after you have finished.

I fit a tempoary consumer unit (1 way RCD with twin socket) on a board below the one that is going be worked on / replaced. I run a supply from the REC isolator to this, and disconnect the existing consumer unit at the same time.

Then you can run a light and an extension for the fridge

takes 10 mins to hook up and 10 mins to remove.

I would also suggest a non maintained emergency light or two (in the cellar) if your consumer unit is in a cellar. An emergency light has batteries in it and if wired up to the loal lighting circuit it would kick in if the lights tripped or if there was a power cut.

PS I also have a generator if this is not a workable solution.
