Process of selling flat, going to rent, can I pay landlord to hold a property?

We are in the process of selling our property and we have the surveyor soon and right now the contract has been sent to the buyers solicitor, and have to come back with any queries. We have been viewing some rented places and have found the perfect one but do not have the full deposit money yet, can we pay any money do you think to hold the property? The landlord said he has a bit of work to do so don't mind waiting.
