VideoPlus+ Codes

Can someone please explain why the Radio Times and other listings magazines still print VideoPlus+ codes? I thought they were only used with old, analogue VCR’s and that they would become redundant after DSO. But apparently not so, as they live on into the digital era.

Could be for those that still have the devices0

But analogue VCR's will no longer record direct from the aerial feed. All you can do is feed them the channel being viewed on the TV. So what is the point of publishing VideoPlus codes any more?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

And often not even that, because a lot of (most?) TVs won't output the picture.
What you can do, however, is hook up a set-top box and record the output of that. I guess that if you were obsessive, it might be possible to rig something up so that the STB changes channel and then the VCR is started. But why not just buy a PVR?0 -

Some VCR could be programmed so that the Videoplus+ code pointed to an AV input and not a channel number. So you had to leave the STB on the required channel to record. Some better equipped VCRs had an IR wand to change channel on the STB. Some DVD recorders had similar features regarding selection of the AV input using Videoplus+. Compared to PVR's now, this is a lot of faffing about but that was was was available at the time.0
