Surely something is wrong here?

I was on the H. Samuel website trying to buy a London 2012 £5 coin which they had on sale. It was listed as 'Limited Availability'. I added 9 of them to my basket and then proceeded to checkout. They took all my personal details (name, address, etc). Then I went and entered my debit/credit card information. When that was all done and I went to confirm the payment, the site returned this message: ""Sorry, we are unable to accept your order as your bank has not authorised payment". I assumed there was issues with my card, so I proceeded to try with two other cards and got the same error message. I checked with my bank and it turns out there is nothing wrong with my card and they did not receive any transaction requests.
I contacted customer support on H.Samuel and they said the item was out of stock which is why the sale was not made. Surely they should have listed the item as 'out of stock' so it would not have been possible to proceed as far as checkout. Are they allowed to leave the item listed as in stock and capture all your personal/payment information when items are not actually for sale?
Thanks for any help.

Is this the £5 coin for £3.49 that's been posted all over the internet? If so, I suspect their system has been inundated with people ordering multiple amounts and their stock has gone very quickly. This type of thing often happens and is not always deliberate. Blame people's greed.0 -

Assuming they don't treat limited edition stock different to any other, I don't see why they shouldn't allow you to proceed through checkout so you can place the order ready for when stock does come in.
Their handling of errors in the checkout is rather poor though isn't it.0
