Windows explorer keeps stopping restarting

Hi
I have a dell studio and after I tried to install a newer version of VLC I now get error message constantly saying windows explorer has stopped working and will look for solution. It then restarts and continuously loops. I did manage to open task manager and do a system restore but I still get it. I have tried safe mode but the same. I use Vista. I will say now that I am not great at things like obtaining error logs but can be told. This message just does not go!
I would be very grateful for any advice.
