I haven't had a lesson in just over a year. I took my practical twice and failed due to nerves. I am thinking of starting lessons again but am thinking of finding a new instructor. My previous one was OK but I think I got too comfortable with her in the car then went to pieces when the examiner was in the passenger seat instead. I want to mix things up a bit and feel a new instructor maybe the way forward. How do I find a decent one who doesn't cost the earth? Few of my friends drive, and those that do didn't learn around here. Any advice?

Try to find a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists who instructs beginners. Ex military instructors are also good, if you can find one.
At the very minimum make sure they have got grade 6 (highest grade) for their ADI check test. If they get iffy about revealing their check test grades then choose someone else0 -
Visit the ADI register on the Driving Standards Agency. It will tell you which officially registered ADIs there are in your area.Only an ADI is legally allowed to charge for lessons.
When you ring them, don't just ask about the price, ask them how much effort have they put into their profession for example;
what colour and shape is their badge? red triangle - trainee, green octagon - fully qualified
what 'grade' are they and when did they last take a check test?
1-3 rubbish
4 minimum
5 Above average
6 Good
Do they have any teaching qualifications?
Have they passed an advanced driving test or two or three?
What other driving related activities do they do?
Good luck and would you please post how you got on? I think it could be very educational :rotfl:!0
