Advice on getting cheapest ATOL holiday

Hi everyone
I'm thinking of having a holiday late August-early September time. Don't have much cash but hoping to get a last minute deal. Am I better off booking a week before I go? or packing my bag and going to a travel agent and seeing what's available on the day? My dates are flexible and so is the destination. All I want is some sun, sea and a shandy or two
