Historic Debt Advice

Good Morning All
This is my first post here so first of all Hi hope everyone enjoyed the weather while it lasted
Ok so here's my story
I recently got my credit report as I was finding it hard to get a mobile phone contract which has never been a problem before
and here came the shock I had some historic debts I was unaware of totaling about 10K
I believe this is from a car I purchased after graduating from my undergrad before the recession hit, but in that time I was involved in quite a nasty crash and my car was written off
At the time of taking out the car (from carcraft which I know now is a huge mistake) I made sure i had gap insurance so this should have covered the remaining finance? well this is what i was told
This all took place over four years ago
furthermore i don't know how a second hand punto cost me 10K
I currently am making a modest salary and from which I am supporting my partner who has two years left in her post grad
hopefully our look will change once she graduates (but nothing is certain) however currently after bills rent and council tax we have a little less that 50 pounds disposable income.
at that rate these debts would take more than 16 years to clear
I was hoping for some advice as a google search just brings up a miriade of companies trying to make a quick buck out of this kind of situation and the array of options is bewildering from DMP to IVA to DRO and bankruptcies
I fully intend to pay off what I owe even though I'm feeling a little aggrieved by carcraft
firstly I only remember taking out one finance package not two and I believe I was miss sold gap insurance and possibly PPI but as I say this was a long time ago and I have no record of any paper work
Any advice would be welcome
and sorry for babbling on
Thank you in advance
James

The company should have records of what you were sold even if you don't.
Send them a subject access request (there are template letters on this forum) along with a cheque for £10. They then have to give you copies of all data they hold about you. What will your verse be?

Are they chasing you for the debts?
Who owns them?
Are they showing as defaulted on your report? How much for/ approx default date?
When did you last pay or acknowledge he debt in writing?
You need a CCA or SAR. The above depends on what the next step is.:beer:0
