I am looking to get a laptop to write my dissertation on. All I will be using is Word, Dropbox, Zotero and Chrome to do general browsing. Battery life isn't that important because it will stay in my study area in the library all day, perhaps just being put in a locker at night.
I have one of the old Asus EEE netbooks which has been fantastic but the screen is just too small to be peering at all day.
Can anybody recommend any bargains, new or second hand?

That looks ideal! Not a great processor, but for what I want, I don't really need one. It's around the price I was hoping for, although closer to £150 would be nice.
The only problem is that I was looking to buy in a month or two, when I imagine this deal will be finished!0 -

Are you joking? What kind of processor were you expecting for £150??
It is the best that you would get at that price, hands down.
If you are just one of those who follow the people who look down on Celeron processors, look at the reality.0 -

Oh, I'm not speaking from any kind of knowledge or informed opinion. I've just always thought that a Celeron was an entry level processor, which as I said is ideal for what I want. However, Sony Vaios with an i3 or i5 processor were around £400 a couple of years ago. Naively, I would have hoped for them to be close to £200 if I were getting it second-hand now, so a Toshiba with a Celeron processor, I would have thought would be less! However, as I say, I don't know much about this (which is why I asked for advice), and the Toshiba looked like a great deal (as I said).0 -

Either way, if you are looking to buy in a month or two, why are you asking now? As any machine, new or second hand machine of good value, will be gone within hours and days.
Apart from that, this isn't the place to look for private sales with no warranty.
Otherwise you could be be back saying that you bought some old laptop on the recommendation of the MSE forum and it fell apart the next day.
So, come back when you are actually ready to buy and have a realistic idea. If you want to buy someone's old laptop from eBay and the like, you will be on your own.
Even the 'refurbs' mentioned here are 'as new' stock. Don't expect even a scratch.0 -

If any machine of good value is gone within hours or days, surely it makes sense to do research beforehand? That was my idea. I don't intend to buy a laptop based solely on somebody's recommendation from MSE. But recommendations undoubtedly help with deciding which type of laptop (processor, memory, screen size, etc) actually represents good value when the time comes to buy.0 -

Let us know what you decided in the end. May be of interest to others looking in your price range. Good luck.0 -
Thank you. And thank you again for the recommendation.0
