Hi

As the title says, pretty much - is it worth switching when I am unsure what my annual costs are going to be?

I am with npower for gas and elec, so far they've not impressed me with their customer service - can't spell my name right for love nor money (it's not that unusual), keep getting people knocking on the door to see who I'm with (v annoying, don't they know if I'm with them or not?).

but, I don't want to switch hastily...

What would you do?

It shouldn't be a problem if you are thinking of switching, try using a reputable comparison site (such as energyhelpline) and it can estimate your consumption for you. Use one of Martin's cashback links too so you get a nice cheque from them if you switch.
