Had a diesel Accord, great car, but if you're having kids you'll want to look at hatchbacks or estates, the boot opening on my saloon accord was tiny (there is no hatchback accord, only saloon or estate. but i think the mondeo and the octavia are available in hatch or estate...) the diesel engine uses a chain and not a belt which i was always told is favourable on a high mileage diesel.
The chain cam and reliability is why i thought it would be a good idea. Wouldn't mind one myself.
Can't beat owner knowledge about boot practicality though! What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

Ain't that the truth!!
To look at my Vectra, most people think the boot is quite small, but the sloped hatchback is very deceiving. Once you open it up people are usually shocked at how big it is..... Could probably fork lift a half loaded pallet into it WITHOUT dropping the seats. and with the seats down it's over 6ft long.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

It's a cracking engine. The thing that lets the Accord down is rear leg room behind tall drivers. I'm 6"2 and had my seat 1 click from the furthest back it went, and there was little room behind me. If the OP is tall then the Mondeo is worth a look, if you dont have the seat a long way back the Accord should be good, the estate has a massive boot.
I wanted to get the new shape Accord estate when i changed cars in Jan, however the lack of rear leg room in the accord, especially when compared to the civic (more room in back of civic!) and size of the Civic boot and the "magic seats" meant the wife wanted me to get the civic instead, so naturally we compromised and bought what she wanted... same 2.2 diesel engine, but still plenty of space in a smaller car. Also didnt have to spend as much to get one...
It will be no surprise to me if the new Civic estate will replace the accord estate because of the size of Civics...0
