Thanks for the advice i have been just having a nosey around today and have been offered £750 px for my megane and saw a 61plate pazaz (what possesed renault to call it that) which from what i could work out is the one in the middle so has air con (good) but trims rather than alloys (suits me fine, I am a woman i cant park!) so the same spec as what i have now. 1.6 petrol 10k on the clock £6400 so with my part ex makes it £5650 before i have started to barter!!

    Its PZAZ.

Its just a Megane with a posh name.

£750 for a seven year old Megane. Surely that can't be right?

sorry, but I still think its ridiculous to spend someone elses money on a new car which will just get in the same state if not serviced - get your priorities right op! you should be looking at minimal outlay (of your own money) in your situation - or is your dad going to be paying for the maintenance and servicing of the new car??

my megane has served me very well indeed. new starter motor is all that has failed on it in the past. This january it needed new tracking rods and discs and pads for its MOT. it has been a work horse. I had a dealer service each year until its last service 2 years ago. but now its starting to fall apart!

Always amazes me when people start talking about 6/7 year old cars as if they are reaching end of life.

My second car is an 11 year old Mitsubishi, and I have to say that I'll be disappointed if it isn't good for another three years.

By a back-of-a-fag-packet calculation, that should mean that your Megane is only about half-way through its life. Just put the £500 or so it needs into it and stop worrying!

Indeed. Just sold my 12 year old Fabia as I was moving to the UK and couldn't be bothered with the import costs/procedures, otherwise I'd have kept it - and it was LHD, although that didn't bother me.

I've just borrowed a car from a friend for a month whilst I faff around sorting the house: it's I don't know what year (Y?) with 122k on the clock and runs fine, even if the tyre pressures were all awry.

I can appreciate OP's dad's offer to get another car, but it really does seem like throwing good money after bad and getting a car not much better than they have.

My only experience at auction years ago was a naff 4-speed Escort. Drove it to a Halfords who recommended a cam belt change - so I said 'do it' - but they didn't have any in stock. So I drove the car the 15 miles home.. guess what happened? Fortunately I was slowing, I slammed in the clutch, and the damage wasn't too bad. So auctions have their own perils....
