are we entitled to anything between jobs???

Hi,

Basically my partner handed her notice in and they accepted it with immediate effect ie. No notice to be worked. The reason they said for this was due to her being off sick for 5 months. She worked for the NHS. She has got another job which she starts in 1 weeks time but will not get paid till the end of august. This means she has just over 1 month with no income which means we are unable to pay the rent and bills for this month. We have applied to the council for local housing allowance but because they dont take monthly outgoings into account we were turned down!

Is there ANYTHING we can claim for the month or so my partner is between jobs to help pay rent & bills etc?

Thanks

No, there are no benefits for these circumstances.

    Options (in no particular order)

    1. Ask her new employer for an advance on her salary.
    2. Borrow from family/friends
    3. Ask for a small overdraft at the bank
    4. Speak to all your non priority creditors - explain the situation and ask for a month's reprieve - they like to be told of problems and are usually accommodating. Rent is a priority debt so this should come first unless your LL is mega understanding and will accept a late payment.
    5. Ebay anything you haven't used for the last 6 months
    6. Cut down on all food (live out of the cupboards/fridge freezer)and entertainment
    7. Any overtime for you?
    8. Are any of your utility bills in credit? Now is the time to ask for it back or ask for a month's 'holiday'.
    9. Read through forums on here on how to exist on peanuts
    10. Check your wife has received all monies due at her last employment- money in lieu of notice/holiday pay?

    Good luck!

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT, TAKE OUT ANY PAY DAY LOANS OR SIMILAR -it's the slippery slope to disaster because the interest rates are astronomical!

Thanks for the reply I thought that might be the case.

We have both always paid our tax, national insurance and never claimed any benefits, I find it unbelievable that there is no short term assistance available for someone that genuinely needs it in a situation like this.........and dont even get me started on the way the council works out local housing allowance! do they not think that people have monthly outgoings! Rant over lol

What about your income? Can't it cover essential bills (namely rent, council tax and minimum payments on credit cards if you have them) for just one month? Everything else can probably be pushed back.

Surely your partner will be paid at the end of the month for the part of July before she resigned.
