Yes, can defo be expensive if not all inclusive. We were half board but still ended up paying quite a lot for drinks with dinner and snacks/lunch during day.0 -
Depends on where you go and where yuo would like to stay, All inclusive can be dear and no less than 4 figures. Personally I would buy a ticket from a travel agent (currently around 600 quid return flying within the next xcouple of months), and hire a beach bungalow for 2 weeks, rates can be good. Some agents will do a package for tickets and bungalow/villa.
Air Mauritius, British Airways, Air France fly from Heathrow throughout the week. Most well equipped bungalows can be hired from 6-10 quid per night. eating out can be dear, but depends wher eyou go. there are some real nice traditional resturants that can be found in suburbs. Also also hire a car to explore the beautiful island, just remember they have a slightly different road etiquette to hereNamed after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
road etiquette is the same as the french - although laws of the road are British!
What kind of holiday are you looking for??
beach and no further than?
exploring?
mixture of both?
water sports?
let us know and can then advise of places to go side of island to stay if you want....as for all inclusive - it depends, sometimes people don't want to leave the hotel, therefore all inclusive works. The food and drinks on AI are only those produced locally, Phoenix is good as is Blue Marlin, Green Island rum is tasty.... if you are prepared to go a bit further a field for food, then there are some great restaurants... one particular hotel, no names, used to have people arrive with carry bags from the store down the road...the guests would then make their lunch etc in their room and provide themselves with cheaper beer and drinks.....they didn't try to disguise it....
when are you thinking of going? It can rain any month, but they had a cyclone in a February once when I was there....fantastic to watch - very boring for people in the hotels, they are geared up for good weather!! However, may - september are probably the main winter months, then it can be dull and drizzley....
as for booking a ticket, and getting an apartment - good idea, just be careful where you rent them. There is a large division of wealth on the island, and not all areas are safe. Grand Baie is a large touristy area that has many appartments, many of them on the baie. Again with water sports - book them through reputable people....if in doubt don't...even if you don't stay in a hotel, many of them will/would allow you to book and pay for their water sports - just thought, when comparing appartments to hotels, remember that many hotels include certain watersports for free....done through trained staff.
If you have questions please PM me....it is a subject of choice, and I can waffle for hours!!!0 -
Thanks murtle.I like beach and exploring.
Didn't particularly want AI but had read that eating out was very expensive.
Thought about June but maybe not?travelover0 -

July is in their 'winter' and if you go then you'll want to be on the west coast as it is warmer and normally less windy then the east.
Hotels are expensive - they are usually 4*....so drinks etc are dear in them.
I've never found restaurants to be that expensive (some are, the high la di da ones that they might take you to on tours etc) but the good local restaurants are normally good value. Be careful though, don't flash your cash - they 'might' increase your prices...especially as a foreigner!!!0 -
Oh, this brings back some fond memories of a few years ago!
When we were on holiday in Mexico we asked a couple for their best holiday recommendation and they said Merville Beach, Mauritius. We took their advice and were not disappointed. Such a beautiful island.
All-Inclusive - We did not do this and boy, did we regret when we got our bill!! Food and drinks are very expensive. As a rule, we do AI on long haul holidays just for less hassle and convenience. (Not sure now why we didn't here?? Didn't think this hotel did it??)
Definitely go AI if you are going the hotel route and doing a package, will be well worth it.
You will have a fabulous time.
Let us know if we can help more in any way..
