Ipod won't recharge

I've got the ol' ipod mini and charging through a USB connection to my PC, which I've done from day one.
It's never failed until now.
On the display, it's got the usual 'Do not disconnect' and the battery icon is charging. After 3 hours, it's usually charged - however, I disconnected it and the battery is empty.
Can anyone please help?
