hard drive partitioning...

ok, its me and my vista again! got a 60gig hd, with a partition on so c: an d: drives. i have only added approx 6 gb of files myself...but the c drive says over 20gb has been used (the windows folder is huge) and the d drive is also almost full. can someone explain this to me..its basically saying i only have about 20 gb of space left! on my old laptop, i only had a c drive, with the same 6 gb files on...and i had a drive that was effectively 30gb-6gb= 24 gb remaining. how come i only have that now when this is double the size?

also, i suppose i had better make restore cds now. im not sure how to do it tbh, what exactly does a restore cd back up? just the windows files or everthing, as i already have an os disc.......if anyone aould please explain these 2 points to me esp the first one id be eternally grateful!

Probably hidden system files, restore points, hibernation files, temporary files etc. http://www.foldersizes.com/ will tell you where the space has gone.

A restore CD is a copy of the hard drive as it was when it left the factory, including the initial Windows installation. If you have the OS CD, you don't really need a restore CD too. Just backup your files (documents, music, photos, email etc.) to CD/DVD.

the laptop is only 3 days old...why do i need a partition? cant i just have a c drive as before? the partition bit is almost full! i may have well bought another 30 gig hd instead of a 60?

oh and i got free software bundled too. if it died tomorrow would this be included in the os disc or is that just vista..or should i back up? if so how cos none of the exe files are there? prob sounds really simple but im just used to xp and one drive which ive only had to reinstall once in three years, never done a backup/restore before
