MBNA ppi reclaim help

My wife recently received a letter from MBNA saying she may be entitled to a PPI refund.
She completed the questionnaire and sent it off, she then received a letter saying she had 7 days to ring a number to answer some further questions. I advised my wife to ring the number and tell them she wanted to deal the query through writing and not over the phone.
However they refused to do this and insisted she must answer the questions on the phone (while I was in work) and started questioning her on my earnings going back to 2004 which my wife told them she was unsure and was pressured in to guessing figures.
Surely this cant be right and the claim can be dealt with through writing to ensure she gets all her facts and figure correct?
