Ex-boyfriend running up debts at my address!

Hi there.

I split from my ex back in April and since then he has been applying (with no luck) for big loans of £5k etc. He also took out a gym membership way after he moved out - at my address - and has already defaulted on the first payment. His bank account and driving licence are still at my address. I've been returning his post "return to sender - not known at this address" and have even taken 7 bank letters (unopened) into the bank in the hope they'd do something.

The trouble is I have no address for him. The last I heard he was living in his car! He has been in trouble with the police for harrassment towards me. His phone has been disconnected - sorry, MY PHONE.... I stupidly took out a phone contract for him (iphone 5) back in February. We tried to get it put into his name but he couldn't get through the credit check with Orange, he then set a direct debit up with his bank but as he is homeless and jobless (through no ones fault but his own) he cancelled the direct debit and its been left unpaid. I know I am liable for the phone so as a last resort I asked Orange to put a total block on the phone and sim so its blacklisted so he can't do anything with it. They'd already put a partial bar on it on Thursday due to him owing £200 in phone bills.

Has anyone got any advice for me? I've looked at doing a notice of disassocation but can't get my credit reports as I have already done the free trials a year or so ago and they want like £14.99 a month just to view the damn things. Its something I can't justify at the moment as important as this all is.

He has left my 26 weeks pregnant, and I already have a 4yr old boy. I've just managed to get myself kinda on the straight and narrow financially but I think he's ruining all that for me. All the debt is in his sole name, but it must have some effect on my address? The phone, well he's completely stuffed that up for me. I can't afford to pay the bills he's left me with, so will have to go on some kind of payment plan and even before it got to that, with him not paying the first bill its already a mark on my account with Orange!

Sorry for the long post, but I am at my wits end, suffering with panic attacks and stress. I just don't know what to do anymore.

  • Right, firstly, you can get a statutory report from each CRA, they cost £2 each.

Secondly, he can apply at your address all he wants, it won't reflect on your file just because of an address. It will only affect his file.

Do/did you have any joint accounts or finances? If so, you will need to write to the CRA's to ask them to disassociate you.

If he tries to apply for anything in joint names, you will see it in your credit searches instead of the associate searches, you can report that as fraudulent.

The Orange account may cause you difficulties, especially if they have marked it as a default on your file. It is in your best interests to settle it as soon as you can.

If you haven't already done so, get him off the electoral roll.

Also, further to the above excellent advice from rabbit_burrow I would ensure that you send these documents back by post with 'GONE AWAY - NO LONGER AT THIS ADDRESS' marked on the envelope - they will understand what this means. It's a subtle difference but worth it.
Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.
