Buying house which has NTL, but I want BT

I am considering buying a property which has NTL via cable, but I would want to get BT re-connected using my existing BT number (same exchange) and get it all done quickly (I get a large number of charity-related calls via BT).

I have established with BT that the property used to be connected to BT about 2 owners ago, but can see no sign of a BT connection going in, and no sign of a BT socket in the property.

What is likely to be involved - I guess it will need an engineer's inspection, but can I get that done before I move in, and then expect to get the transfer done quickly as soon as I physically move? Anyone any experience please?

Installing a new line costs about £120 and there is probably about 2-3 week wait.

If there is a line already there hidden away somewhere then it will be free.

    £124.99 now.

As the BT master socket is 'missing' and a new one would have to be installed, I'd doubt whether Openreach would waive the charge - and hence BT will charge you.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

My recent experience was slightly different........
We recently moved into a rental property (in between selling one house and buying another) which seemed to have NTL lines/ cable everywhere. However on closer inspection I found an old BT line (followed the wiring from an external junction box) which had not been used for years. BT arranged for a new number within 24 hrs, a recorded message at our old phone number - giving the new number, and an engineer visit within 48hrs. During the visit by the engineer he disappeared in his van to "sort something out round the corner" -(probably went for a smoke..lol!) and we were connected on his return. So far (this was over 3 months ago and I have had at least one quarterly bill) I have not been billed for any of this in terms of a "connection fee". Not something I have queried obviously....but something I half expected to be charged for. I have to say a 1st class service!
