I would say I was middle to left of the lane, because there were two cyclists riding double width that I had spotted on approach to the turning..

The cyclists have to look out for thmselves, they do not own the road
looking at the street view, I'm not sure why you are so far out to execute a left hand manouvre

the road is two lane at the traffic junction.

Unless a lane is split with lines, then it's a single lane.
Indicating is completely irelivent. Indicating holds no sway, whether the OP did or didn't is a red herring.
It doesn't matter whatsoever that the OP was over to the right, it's a single lane.

OP, (in my opinion), you are completely blameless. The van driver undertook on a single carriageway and caused an accident by doing so. I would hope his insurer pays up fully.

I agree but for slightly different reasons, the OP's vehicle is in front and hence has priority, the other vehicle attempted to perform a manouvere where it was obvioulsy not clear and safe to do so.
However the insurers may want an easy time and after all it is one or the other going to compensate.

From this view it does look like people seem to treat the road as two lanes

Also on the other side of the road

OP did the van come from the side road just before McDonalds?

Just looking at the original diagram again, if it is as drawn then it looks like the OP could be at fault, it appears he has driven into the rear quarter of the van.

You could also say the accident happened because the OP didn't check the mirrors after the cyclists had passed and pulled into the van's path. What if it had been more bicycles?

Both parties are potentially at fault imo.
