European breakdown cover policy at short notice

Aargh. I stupidly assumed I could book eurpoean break down cover at any time – we leave for a UK/France road trip on Saturday. But i’ve looked at 2 policies now (QDOS and Green Insurance) and both say the policy must start 10days before we leave.

Is this usual – have I left it too late?

You can get it from the AA as long as you are not on foreign soil.

Might be a bit expensive depending on how long you are away. I used them a few years ago for a short trip and it was reasonable value but I tried them last year for a two week holiday and they weren't that cheap.

Also worth trying Green Flag, that's who I did use last year. Price was good although it was an addition to my existing UK cover but they do short term European cover too but phone only....

I believe QDOS only have a 48 hour lead-time - you only need to buy it 10 days ahead if you want the breakdown before you travel bit to apply.

From their website:
"We only need 48 hours notice to provide cover under our policy, however for the cover before you travel (mentioned above) to apply you must purchase 10 days before you travel."

I contacted Startrescue.co.uk - they only need 24hrs and they're on quidco with 15% cashback so that'll do us

phew! we just spend a small fortune on the car maintenance prior to our trip but it would just be sods law if we didn't have any cover at all..
