Costly mistake - forgot payment!

I recently forgot to make a monthly payment to my MBNA credit card which I have over £8K on a balance transfer rate of 0 %. For this mistake, the charged me a late default sum of £12 and a whopping interest charge of £130.

When ringing MBNA, they first offered me a new rate on my balance of 9 % which I was completely unhappy with! I did manage to get them to revert back to my balance transfer rate of 0 %, but the interest charge for that month I forgot to pay remains on my statement. What's my chances of getting MBNA to refund the interest charge? I know it was my fault and I broke the agreement, but £142 seems unfair for a mistake. I have recently set up a direct debit!

Slim, but worth a try with someone higher up?

Check the next statement thoroughly (as the direct debit may not have been set up in time), and be sure to pay by other means until you see the message "your payment will be collected by direct debit from your nominated account on xx/xx/xx".

We had a similar problem with a 0% Tesco card. We set up a DD but did not realise it had not been put in place. Then, due to Easter hols and a few other things going on, we did not make the first minimum payment.

OH rang up to see what we could do and to pay it in full and cancel it if necessary.

However they were very nice, cancelled the £12 late payment fee and assured him that the 0% stayed in place. They did however request payment in full for the first month, fortunately only £116.

We were very surprised that they allowed him to keep the 0% rate!
