Admiral Insurance - Recalculate lost Premiums - Points

Hi,

I've was insured with Admiral for three terms of insurance, 10 months apart.

Mid way through my first term i got some points and upon my renewal I forgot to tell them about it. Looked around and got some advice, the points did not affect my premium at the the time so that helped. Also was not aware as a young driver that I had to tell them about this anyways.

My contract with them ended a weekend ago, and on the last day of the last term of insurance with them, as part of a price match they were doing for me they asked and so i told them that over two years ago I got some points on my license.

It all went down hill from there, even though 9hrs later my policy was due to end. :(

Now at the time of writing this thread, my policy has ended.

Current Situation:

Now the premiums they claim are now outstanding on the account could not be verified until the week after as pricing were closed. Also I contested the amount and the amount was double checked and was not billed to me till the week after. By that point, when amount was actually due, the policy had expired by 2 days.

So the two renewals that Admiral are claiming for, typically were around £800 each for ten months insurance. Admiral want £1200 in lost premiums for both of these two years. So basically what they are saying is that I would expected to pay around £1400s or so each year if I stayed with them.

As absurd as that amount is, I desperately seeking advice on this issue, as expected, the authorities are less than helpful and do not offer much help. I can file a complaint with the FSA but not before I have done my homework.

What I think?

- they can only calculate lost premiums ( assuming this is allowed ) on the most recent policy because that is the policy that was active at the time.
- They cannot pursue for previous policies in any shape way or form as the policies have ended and we are no longer bound to the ts and cs.

Admiral policy link, I double checked it with my old ones and it appears to be the same to me: w ww.admiral.com/policyDocs/AD116%20_policybook_0313.pdf

Your complaint would be with the FOS...

As far as the past premiums go you are going to struggle to get exact numbers but a couple of dummy quotes on the Admiral site should give you a reasonable approximation of the extra you should have been paying.

Don't forget to move dates etc back too so your age/experience/ncb etc are the same as they would have been back then.

Of cause the other option is that they retrospectively void your insurance for non-disclosure which means you lose your NCD and have to declare the cancelled insurance to your car, home, pet, travel etc insurers for the rest of your life. The premium inflation you are seeing now will seem trivial compared to that.

They can apply additional loadings to historic policies. You gave them false information and they priced their offering based on that false information. At the moment they are accepting it was an error of judgement and not fraud so giving you the chance to correct the error. If you decide you dont want to correct it then it starts looking like fraud

No, your premiums were incorrect because you made a "mistake" and consequently they calculated wrongly, based on your (false) declaration you had completed the application truthfully.

Beware the consequences of messing them around! (Void policy on your record is with you for life, and you can still get it voided if they decide to do so due to your not paying correctly)

(Were it the other way round and you discovered 2 years later you had overpaid due to their "mistake", you would be entitled to pursue a refund.)

Cheers people, thanks for the replies.

I want to pay and get it sorted so thanks Vaio, I did not think about that. I will be trying that today or perhaps tonight and see what types of prices I get. Get some of my own sums together and see what types of prices we are talking about. Can you do this retrospectively on PC Websites??? Go back in time and see for yourself???

    @InsideInsurance, Quentin.

Thanks guys that make a lot of sense, and the long term outlook does not look good for messing them about. I just want them to be fair with the price, I have already arranged to pay it but why not do some homework first. Atleast now I know I have no what-ifs in my mind.

you won't be able to do backdated ones but if you are now 25 with 4 years NCB and the policy in question was two years ago then do a dummy quote with age at 23, ncb at 2 etc.

As I said, it won't be exact but if it shows that the points make no difference but Admiral are asking for an additional 50% of premium then you can at least question it.

and very importantly make the convictions the same age as they would have been originally in terms of months since the conviction

After getting a new quote on Admirals direct site, I can confidently say Admiral 'HIKE' their premiums for drivers that have points (using a mobile) on their licence. BIG TIME!

Entering my up to date details, and using the same values I entered in previously to try and generate some quotes to get a roundabout idea as vaio suggested.

Basically ADMIRAL HIKE your premiums by a whopping 60% as much in some cases. Doesn't matter what you do, but basically thats what it looks like for me. Even though at the time, the market didn't look like it cared about points (mobile). Now it looks like a money making scan if you ask me!

You are perceived (quite rightly) as a greater risk. They want to charge more so how is it a scam.

Sounds more like you tried to scam them by not disclosing the conviction.

Buying new insurance and failing to declare points to get a lower premium is a scam imho, but what I did .... well you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
