How to fill a large crack round doorframe

Hi,

Thought I'd come to you guys for your expertise.

I'm in the process of decorating my flat and I'm a bit stumped as to how to fill this crack around a door frame:

The crack is very deep so any filler that I try to apply to the adjacent walls / door frame doesn't have anything to adhere to and simply falls through the crack!

Any advice on what I should do?

Thanks

I would be tempted to put a bead of decorative architraving over it on all sides and paint it to match the existing door frame.

Or you could pack it with something before filling. I've used newspaper in the past, but I'm sure there are better things to use.

I see that is on the hinged side and one would assume that it was flush at some point so the question would be why has it moved and is there still movement there? If so best to sort that out first.
  • The full structural building survey didn't come up with anything.

I think the previous occupier moved the door around and she didn't take great care of the property.

The architraving idea sounds like a good one.

    Thanks

Dense question, but I presume you mean tape over the right angle gap i.e. half the tape would be on the door frame and half would be on the wall with the gap in-between.... :o?

Yes. Once plastered the easy fill will have adhered to the tape on both sides. The bit of tape still protruding next to architrave just score with a stanley knife.

Caulking is impossible to sand and as the gap is quite large I dont think you will get a satisfactory finish. I certainly wouldnt use newpaper. Thats a bodge job and the crack will reappear. A squirt of expanding foam would adhere to all surface and support the frame. Use cling film to keep it in place then possibly caulk it if you think you can get away with it with the gap being quick big.
