Marc Jacobs handbag-Do I have the right to exchange?

Hi,

I need some advice on whether or not I have the right to exchange a Marc Jacobs handbag, which I am very unsatisfied with.

It's cream leather and consistently gets marked from whatever item of clothing I am wearing. I stopped wearing it with jeans, as the dye just transfers on to it, but now I've noticed it actually gets marked, whatever I wear it with, skirts, dresses etc.

I have even paid £100 for it to be cleaned once, and I can't afford to do that again.

The bag cost £380 and I bought it from Selfridges in London just over a year ago. (I still have the receipt) I've contacted Marc Jacobs customer service and they were pretty useless, just stating that this kind of damage was not on their repairs policy.

I want to know if I can go into Selfridges and ask for an exchange. I expected to have this bag for years, but I can't wear it with anything, and as it was so expensive and a special treat to myself it is really frustrating.

Please advice me on what I can do?
Thank you.

You can try but I would be quite surprised if Selfridges are prepared to do anything after you've had the bag for a year. If you can't use it any more you may be better cutting your losses and selling it on ebay.

I dont think its the bag's problem that the clothes you are wearing leak dye - its a well know problem with light leather suites too, dont sit on them with dark clothes on.
There is nothing stopping you asking Selfridges but there is nothing stopping them from saying no.

I can't imagine you'd get anywhere with Selfridges either, the bag isn't faulty, the clothes you are wearing it with are leaking dye, jeans do that, as will other dark or bright colours.

The bag is not at fault here and it is very unlikely that you would get anywhere with a retailer on this one. You should have been advised when you had it cleaned how it could be cared for to prevent this from happening as there are excellent protection and cleaning products available to make sure that it doesn't absorb the dye.
    Hope this helps

  • Thank you for you replies. I know it is highly unlikely.
Will have to learn from my mistakes.

    Thanks
  • Is there any sort of leather protection that you can put on to seal it, similar to the waterproofing sprays and creams that you can get for leather shoes?
These do often change the colour slightly but at least it might make the bag more usable.

There are products that can be used very successfully to stop this happening that will not alter the look or feel in any way.
    Hope this helps
