Arranging utilities for First time buyer

redev2005
I am hoping to exchange contacts on my first property purchase this week. One thing I am not sure about is arranging utilities.
At what point can I start arranging electricity, water etc?
Do I have to use the current vendors supplier or can I shop around?
Will the vendor's contract be cancelled when they leave or do I have to arrange that?
Sorry if these are stupid questions.
thanks for any help.

Once you move in, you are on a 'deemed contract' (google that term) with the previous owner's suppliers for gas and electricity. You should read meters and take and keep the readings safely as the immediate first task when you move in.
You should immediately contact the suppliers and give them readings and set up accounts. Once you have done that, you can contact other suppliers to take over the supply. Your solicitor should get the seller to identify the suppliers as part of precontract queries - make sure they ask the question. If you cannot get answers, don't worry - as soon as you move in, try the electricity and gas forum here who will tell you how to find out the current suppliers.
Water has a monopoly supplier for each area. Read the meter if there is one as for Gas and Electricity and set up the account in the same way.You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0
