Standing Charge or Gas Usage Charge ??

  • The meter has been in place for 3 months now and I have not used the gas but the meter is showing a debt of £28!!. Contacted supplier and was told this was a standing charge, charged on a daily basis to the meter.
Can't believe the standing charge is more than £112 per annum so if you've been using no gas, why haven't you paid a penny off your debt over the summer?

Some tariffs have standing charges for gas of over £160.

the prepay meter was installed by force, warrant threat letters were being sent at £50 a time and I was disputing the amount i owed and the amount offered to pay off the debt. I contacted supplier and stated I would only pay for the gas I used and would not pay for debt letters or meter install charges. decided to not use the gas anymore and avoid using the meter now. explained it would be a waste of time installing it and even offered to pay a lump sum of 50% of the debt to avoid the meter being installed. the supplier seemed to over use their rights to charge £50 for visit letters being posted. I recieved 4 letters threatning disconnection even when I telephoned several times explaining I wont be using any gas. half the debt I now owe is charges and admin fees. supplier wanted to install the prepay meter to collect this debt but I dont think it is fair to use a meter in this way. expalined to supplier that I was out of work and would not have the means to top the meter up with the required amount each week. supplier decided that an extra £300 in charges on top of the debt already owed would help,, i have a good chuckle when I think about that.

When you've cleared your debt, swap over to Ebico. They don't have rip-off standing charges.

nPower also have no daily standing charge, at least on their standard tariff, if you agree to pay by DD (monthly or quarterly)

I just check and I couldn't find a tariff from npower in my area without a standing charge. When I spoke to them about I was told that they were going to have a standing charge on all their tariffs going forward. I wonder if this has now changed?
