Disabled Tax Credits Help

Hi everyone!
I have sent off my Tax Credits renewal form, but I am a little concerned by a few things.
First of all I am self-employed (have been for 2 years now). I am a disabled person who is on disabled tax credits. My renewal went perfectly fine for 2011/12 period, but here is where it concerns me...
The lady I spoke to on the phone last year told me I need to let them know at the end of the tax year if I have not been working 16+ hours a week. (Which I have done this years form) so I have been going with what she told me, by not letting the them know I have not been receiving any income during the periods I have not been able to find work throughout the year.
I know I will owe money back for the times I have not had any income this year (I've saved enough in order to pay it back), but my concern is I'm now learning that I should have told them right away that I was not working.
I don't mind paying the money back for the time I have not worked. But i'm worried they penalise me for not letting them know sooner, because I simply don't have evidence of the phone call from last year stating that I should wait to tell them until I receive the tax renewal form.
Any help or advice would be grateful, thanks.
