Bombs killed 88 people in Sharm-el-Sheikh in 2005. Since then it's been relatively peaceful despite a revolution and a coup.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office believes there is "a high threat from terrorism" in Egypt. It advises against travel to some areas of Egypt but not Sharm.
  • There is a tourist alert but it says it applies to US citizens only.

    Hmmm decisions decisions

from personal experience the hotels in Egypt generally are far better than those in Tunisia.
Which hotels are you looking at?
The Red Sea areas have no travel restrictions for UK citizens at the moment and to be honest the only time you will see any trouble when you are there would be if you were watching the news.

  • We were looking at Viva Sharm - Holidays are so cheap to Egypt for obvious reasons and its somewhere we have both always wanted to go.

Trouble is 6/7hrs away so hmmmmmmm just scared to book up now incase its spreads or something.

Also do you need vacinations or anything?
  • The Egyptian government will not let the trouble get anywhere near the Red Sea, they are too aware of how devastating it would be to their tourism. Honestly, i wouldn't worry about it. I've been there when it's been going off in Cairo before and saw absolutely nowt!
It's recommended to get vaccinations and i think these are the same as the ones for Tunisia. Have a look here...

Viva Sharm looks nice. Its not one of those hotels whose name pops up a lot but some great reviews.

We came back from Sharm a week ago, and Sharm itself is fine for any trouble.
(In fact we stayed directly opposite your hotel in Falcon Hills)
There are a number of roadblocks on the roads - but they don't stop tourist vehicles - only private cars to check what they're up to.

Every Egyptian I spoke to was gleeful of the Morsi ousting. In fact the night of his ousting, we were out at Soho Square, and the bus home got stuck in a traffic jam of cars out waving flags, beeping and abandoning cars to dance in the street.

Cairo/Luxor/Alexandria trips were all cancelled though at the time and I should imagine still.
We did the Jerusalem trip instead for a bit of culture :)

Good....long drive though, and you're away from the hotel for 28 hours in total.
£80pp from Grande Tours (to the left of Viva Sharm on the other side of the road).
Apart from the border crossing - the first stop is the Dead Sea for a swim/ float - then onto Bethlehem with a guide and lunch, then onto Jerusalem.
I'm not wildly religious, in fact not at all, but it was interesting none the less.

We got picked up at 8pm on the Thursday and got back just before midnight on Friday.
