Advice please: I want to securely dispose of a dead laptop.
(I dropped it, paid £25 to find out there was no obvious quick fix, and decided not to pay out more only to find it wasn't repairable.)
I've managed to locate and remove the Hard Drive, which I've now dismantled and smashed up.
Is personal info/data stored anywhere else? Do I need to remove anything else for security?
Many thanks.

Erm... perhaps the hard drive was the only problem. What were the symptoms?
In answer to your question, once the hard drive is out you are safe to dispose of the laptop.
But let us hear more about the laptop in question. It might still be simple, unless you already know otherwise.0 -
Thanks HereAgain. After dropping, it wouldn't turn on. The On/Off switch had been a bit wonky before, so I asked a repair shop to look at it. They straightened out the switch, but it still didn't switch on. The power is getting to it, i.e. the battery charging light comes on when plugged into the mains, but otherwise not a flicker!0

What was their diagnosis?
take the bezel off, and push the power button microswitch from underneath!!

If power is getting to the board, take the bezel off, and possibly keyboard and top cover and have a nosey around for damage.!!

Have you re-seated the RAM...and replaced the hard drive?0

Just found this site for you, maybe you will recover your £25 at least if you can do nothing to repair it

You may get some cash for it at least; the reason why they pay is because connectors/wires/boards plus the CPU have gold in them as well as palladium in hard drives, steel, brass and other goodies throughout, don't just throw them"Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -

If I knew what where the RAM was, I might be able to re-seat it...
Sadly, I'm a dinosaur where the innards of a pc is concerned!
The original Hard Drive is now in bits, and probably not going to splash out on a new one without knowing if there are other issues.
Thanks so much for your help, and all other responders.0 -
