No Ethernet Port

I've just purchased a new Dell XPS-12 Duo laptop / tablet and to keep the design slim, they've not put an Ethernet port on it.

This has not prevented me connecting wirelessly to my TP-Link ADSL router TD-W8968, but now I've got a challenge ... how to get it to 'talk' to my LaserJet HP1015 printer which is connected to the USB port of the router.

You see the TP-Link client USB sharing software requires that the computer be hard wired to the router via Ethernet to complete the installation. I've tried doing it wirelessly but it just keeps reporting that the USB control installation is incomplete! Very frustrating.

Has anyone found a workaround to this situation or am I snookered? :o

So its your router's limitation, not your new laptop.
Is there a PC permanently hard-wired into the router?

Yes, my main Dell workstation is attached via an Ethernet cable ... all other laptops, kindles etc. connect wirelessly.

If it's infrequent use a print to pdf software and send it to a hard wired computer and then print it from there.

Print to pdf is handy because sometimes you cannot send the actual files to a different computer. There are a few Web receipts and invoices the council gives me that cannot be loaded up a second time

Make sure the printer is correctly installed on the permanent machine, then share it over the network just using Faildows' file & printer sharing. On your laptop you should then be able to add a network printer.

Tried but it's not finding the printer.

Now why didn't I think of that? :o

I'll go down that route because then I have an Ethernet capability for any future occasions. Thanks for that suggestion.

Can I just point out that, these days, things which require ethernet and won't work over wireless are rare and poorly designed.
Its not expensive, but I'd be inclined to suggest entirely unnecessary.

The OP's printer / router setup wasn't designed "these days". Older stuff wasn't designed for the new wireless world. I have a similar problem trying to print wirelessly from my tablet to my three year old canon printer which is on my network. But it's all well designed stuff.
