N power billing gone wrong...

June 2012 I decided to leave n power to get both my gas and electric else where, on phoning up n power I was told I was in credit by £122 in electric but in debit by £77 on my gas...
The final bill came in July 2012 saying the same thing... On phoning up saying use my credit to pay my debit and send me the rest of my money etch I was told there was an error in my bill and I actually owed. n power £80, I asked for an updated bill reflecting this before I paid, which they said they would do... The bill came saying exactly as before... Again I called them up and got I still owed n power £80 so send a bill saying this....
This cat and mousse game has gone on for over a year now with n power not sending me the correct bill.... Obviously I'm in no hurry to pay n power but I don't want to get in to debt..

I'm a right refusing to pay without a bill? What's the next steps? Or should I let it carry on?

If they have sent you two printed bills showing they owe you money, but are refusing to settle it, raise an official complaint. Details of how to do so are on their website in the Contact Us section.
There's also an nPower rep frequents this forum, so you might get some contact and a resolution that way. Either way, I wouldn't just let it carry on. Somebody owes somebody some money, and it should be sorted out, hopefully in your favour!

If you want your money back I suggest you raise a formal complaint

Don't just let matters drift on as it appears you owe £77 on your gas account, so either raise a complaint and get it suspended pending resolution of the complaint, or pay the sum demanded.

Did you really mean 2012 you got the final bills?
Looks like you did. Perhaps your credit file is already trashed. Worth checking with the credit file agencies if you're bothered.

Yes it really was June 2012 I got my final bill!

Had a letter middle if last year saying there was a glitch with my account and they would re bill me within 8 weeks so that's dragged it out a bit longer,
I feel like I'm getting no where fast! And spending hours on the phone too

Will raise it as a complain
  • I am in a similar position to you I have been with npower for 5 months. On May 1st I received a letter saying I was £40 in credit, I phoned them up and they said I would be in my account 3 days later. After waiting a week for the money I decided to phone them up again they then told me that I would need to give them an up to date meter reading before they could credit me it which I did, they informed me that a new bill would be sent to me within 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I rang them back as I had no bill still, they told me my meter reading was wrong so I gave it to them again telling them that it wasn't wrong. They informed me the man who can and read the meter when I first moved in had got it wrong which meant the billing system had gone wrong, and that I would receive a bill within the next 2 weeks. Last week I phoned up again explaining it has been almost 3 MONTHS since I first raised the problem and still no bill, they explained to me the system says its still pending so they completed a complaint on my behalf.

Then yesterday I received a bill saying I owe npower £6,500 for the last 5 months. I will be phoning the company tomorrow as that is more than I pay in rent a year.

someone please tell me how this is possible??

    fuming isn't the word!!

    Hi Leanne1234,

I'm really sorry to read about the problems you've had with your bills - something doesn't sound right here.

Please can you pop me all the details in an email (address is on my profile page) and I can take a look at this for you?

    Best wishes,

I have switched from Npower but still waiting for a correct bill. None of my bills since about November have been correct, they contain basic arithmetic errors. I sent a letter of complaint to NPower, recorded delivery. I checked it had been delivered but despite this my letter was ignored.

Posting on here finally got a response from the Npower Executive Complaints. They agreed to re-issue the bill but after a couple of weeks sent me one that was exactly the same. I complained again and was told they would re-issue the bill but after a few weeks I was told that the result was the same so there was no point. The response was essentially that because they believe the final balance is correct, it does not matter that the bill doesn't add up. I pushed this and have been told (for the 3rd time), a corrected bill will be issued. So far I am still waiting and have had an email from Npower stating that 8 weeks have passed so I can take it up with the regulator, which I intend to do.

My opinion is that the new billing system Npower have simply does not work properly.
