Underpayment of tax 07-08 due to Employer

Please can anyone give me advice on what to do regarding Under payment of income tax which happened 6 years ago when I was an employee so was paid by PAYE?
I changed jobs in the June of 07 and gave my new employer my P45 but on the P60 for 07-08 they did not include this and therefore my tax was under calculated and I now owe over a grand.
Is it the employers responsibility to ensure the P60 is correct especially when they have been given all the relevant paperwork from me or will I have to pay the missing tax?
