Ideas for a birthday cake

My son will be 6. I want to make him a cake which will be cheap and simple.

I am thinking of doing a treasure chest, I have a loaf tin I can bake two chocolate cakes in and put sweets in the centre of it. The only thing I am not sure of is how to angle the top layer so the lid appears to be open. Has anyone any suggestions how to do this, or any other ideas for a simple cake I can make.

Thanks

Could you cut the top cake on an angle so that it appears to be an open lid? To prop it up, use plenty of sweets spilling out along the side edges of the lid?

Other simple ideas include a caterpillar or train from a Swiss roll, or a fish using a round cake for the body and a triangle cake for the tail. A square or rectangular cake could be decorated with sweetie fish and strands of green laces, to make a fish tank.

Some cake shops hire out baking tins in different shapes, including numbers.

Google 'treasure chest cake' and then click 'images'. You'll see lots of pictures, some of them will probably have instructions when you go to the web pages. I like the idea of the ones with the gold coin chocolates jammed inside. :)

I did a dinosaur cake for our nephew at his third birthday, and that's how I got instructions to make dinosaurs from fondant. Good luck with it.

I would make sure the cake had a good 'rise' and cut the top off. pile some sweets onto the top of the bottom layer and then use skewers to hold the top onto the base layer. cover with choc icing. then use strips of dark fondant icing to represent straps or liquorice laces layed into the icing for the gaps between slats of wood. It would be nice to use foil covered chocolate 'coins' for the treasure!
