Printing an image with GIMP

I've been manipulating images in GIMP but now find I can't print to A4.
My printer settings are fine but when I try and print the image only covers about two thirds of the page.
Have googled the problem and it seems a lot of people have asked, but I can't find a proper answer.
The only one I thought would work was to change the settings of the page by going to File -- New -- then setting the image size, but I can't get it to work by doing that either.
Any ideas anyone?

Not acquainted with GIMP - but can you export from GIMP to desktop and try printing from that ?0

Is the GIMP image you created a scaleable fit for A4, (i.e. is it the same shape as A4) ?
Can you resize the margins on Gimp before printing and is your GIMP print set to A4 ? File > Page set up (on GIMP).0 -
