Passport turn around time.

We sent our passports off yesterday to get renewed, they were years out of date, and mine needed a name change to my married name as well.

I know it's hard to say the turn around time, as I know this is the peak time, but the travel agent said about 6 weeks, and the Post Office said about 2-3 weeks.

My question is, and I'd love to know other peoples opinions, would you risk it and go ahead and book a holiday that departs on the 25th August?

Personally I wouldn't book a holiday abroad unless I had a valid passport that would cover the holiday in my possession.

    Would I risk it? no

it may be worth booking an appointment at a passport office and getting one issued over the counter, at least I think you can do that at a cost of course

there you go premium service takes 4 hours and fast track takes a week

Passport type service Renew or amend a standard adult 32-page passport

    Premium service £128

    Fast Track £103

I know it's a bit of a risk and I hadn't really considered it until the PO woman said that it only took 2-3 weeks (but obviously they don't know for sure, so I wouldnt take it as a given just because she said so.

It's just that I found a really good deal and want to go now!! When I get my mind set on something, I'm really impatient!

I guess you guys have confirmed what I already knew for sure though :(

One more question, if it didn't come in say 3 weeks, can I then decide I want to fast track it and go to the passport office and pay the extra?

    No

have a look on the passport.gov website, you cant just turn up at a passport office AFAIK you need an appointment

Of course it is up to you but is it worth spending thousands on a holiday to Vegas only to not be able to go because of not having a passport? Insurance wouldn't cover it.

A normal application is £75 ish, to get it in a week would cost £103 .

So IMO you need to spend £30 to save yourself the possibility of losing thousands, of course you could apply for the passport wait until you get it, then book the holiday, it may be cheaper then

You can ring the passport office in say 2weeks, see how they are getting on with the application and if neccesary book an appointment for a fast track the following week, just incase your passport does not turn up. If it turns up ring and cancel, if it doesn't keep the appointment and pay the extra to fast track.
(It can take 7-10 days to actually get a fast track appointment as they are really busy at this time of year).
    £100 - £10,000

    Thanks guys :)

Yeah, I totally wouldn't risk losing the money. As it turns out, I got carried away for nothing....that was the week we were originally going to go but couldn't go because the DH couldn't get time off work....but I'd totally forgot as I've checked that many different flights and room combinations that I'm going crossed eyed from it all, my brains scrambled :rotfl:

    Thanks again for replying :)

    It will be 2-3 weeks.
