I have acquired 6 surround speakers unfortunately there is no amp. I think this is the system ive got, according to putting in the amp serial number on Google.

here are 2 photos of the rear of the tall speakers.

As you can see the rear of one of the 4 speakers has a plug and wires. I would imagine the wires stick into those clamp kind of things in the amp? What are the plugs for?

Ok. So im looking for a amp thats not going to cost the earth. What I want to do is have the sound coming through the speakers when I watch TV, DVD's or even the Playstation like my son's kit.

I do not have a DVD player only the PS3 which does the job, however if I can buy a reasonably priced amp that has a dvd player with it great.

So techie guys, any suggestions please. Nothing thats going to break my bank account please.

Cheers.

There's a Panasonic label on the back of one speaker. Why not google the model number from that label to find a matching amp? OK, I see you've done that - it's described as having 'wireless rear speakers' - I would think the chance of finding another maker's amp that matches the Pana speakers directly is remote. Is there a Pana on eBay?

So i cant just buy a amp regardless of manufacturer?

    As before its this system

    Panasonic SC-PT960

But I was hoping that amps were amps and would work on any speaker. If this is not the case I need a amp from above serial number.

The only things about speakers that need to be compatible with an amp are...

connectors which can be changed if necessary

impedance - usually 4 8 or 16 ohms some amps can take any of those but will only deliver maximum power into 4. It isn't wise to connect 4 ohm speakers to an amp designed for higher.

power handling - the speakers need to be rated to handle the amps maximum output - lower rated ones will work but could be damaged at high volume settings.

You need to start by finding the impedance and power ratings for your speakers.

On the back of one of the tall speakers it says impedance 3 ohms on the woofer it says 6

Yes, but the rear speakers are WIRELESS speakers, so they'll have RF receivers and amplifiers built in, and the OP won't be able to connect a conventional AV amplifier without taking them apart and disabling the electronics, surely...?

Correction - the rear amp is a separate unit, so all will depend on what kind of connectors are on the speakers - if they're the Pana-specific plugs and sockets that are pictured on the back of the rear amp in that advert, OP may find some difficulty - if they're conventional terminals, a conventional amp will be fine.

AV amps from Richer Sounds or similar places would probably be the best starting point

OP, how much do you want to / can you spend?

Ive called richer Sounds, and as the speakers were a complete package with a amp its unlikely I will get it working without a Panasonic amp thats made for the speakers.

Not to worry another trip to the skips.

No need to go to the skip - as far as I understand you've got some wireless speakers and some wired. It looks like the wired ones are just 2 cable, + and -. That means you can plug them into any amp you like.
I was going to suggest cutting the plug off the end of the other speakers too - are these just + and - too, and there could plug into any amp?
Richer sounds will have great surround sound amps from around £150 and these speakers would get you started...

it sounds like its only the rear speakers that could cause a problem.

so at worst, if they dont work with the amp, you could simply replace the rear speakers, not need to get rid of the whole lot
